1970-1975 vanguard boat with 140hp mercruiser. This is my first ski boat and i love it. I have checked the timing. Its set to 6 btdc at 650-700 rpm. My spark plugs are gapped to .035. Wires are new. I dont have a manual yet but will soon. When i try to accelerate i have to feather throttle until rpms up a bit then i can go full throttle. It boggs to the point that it completly dies out. I have a rochester carb that i cannot seem to get any info on. My accelerator pump seems fine. Im lost and not sure if i should attempt to try and set the points my self. Any help with this would be great. What should the next step be.

Re: Engine bogs when trying to accelerate

I'm not an I/O guy, but when an outboard bogs....a lot of the time it's because the timing isn't advancing properly(or carb/timing aren't in sync). Could that be your problem?
