I just registered with you guys & I'm impressed with the knowledge base. I bought a 1972 boat with a Mercruiser stern drive. Known spec's are 120 hp, 4 cyl., gasoline & the only s/n I can find is on the engine valve cover, s/n 2727527. The I/O gear lube is divided into an upper & lower reservoir, power head has a lube filler screw on both sides. The top of the power head has a large rib with a 9/16 dia hole. can someone tell me the model info ? It seems to be in good shape except that the prop shaft has approx. .065 axial play (in & out). Is this acceptable ? Thank you,Taezzar

Absolutely normal.

And Welcome to Iboats.

Regarding the drive.
Those plugs are not for 2 sections of the drive, the upper plug is a vent and the lower is the fill/drain. Oil is put in from the lower hole.
Go to http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm for some pictures and other info.
