Re: Gear lube leaking from water intake Mercruiser/Alpha
If the correct replacement seal kept failing, and this aftermarket high performance seal was installed and now it is damaged, you need to track down the root cause. If it is the "kepper" for the water pump, that is a bit suspect because that part is static (does not move), unless there is a stack-up clearance problem, in which, then you probably shouldn't be using this different seal. I suspect a shaft problem (grooved, nicked, or excessive runout). Might be a combination of both problems. Can you get some good close up pics of the shaft, and of that "kepper" (faceplate?)you talk about on the water pump?
Edit: I just found this on line.... for those who haven't seen one before (like me). I wonder how many people use them with success in an application that it isn't designed for?

oh, and here is the service bulletin that installs this seal. Looks like it is indeed for an outboard (Mercury 3.0) Plus, you need extra new stuff besides the carrier itself to do this install on the outboards. HTH...

Maybe this thing just doesn't mic out correctly, either at the seal itself, or at the o-ring.
