My 1972 Merc 110 runs good but sometimes the engine revs up, but the boat speed does not pick up. almost as if the lower unit is slipping. Is there any easy way I can Find out what is happening? As you can probably tell I am not a marine mech!

in forward gear engine off you can turn prop one way by hand in rev gear engine off you can not turn prop one way or the other. if it dones slip your prop may neede to be reworked or replaced.

The rubber hub in the prop may be slipping at high load, like WOT. Draw a line across the hub and nut with a felt pen, run the boat and then look at your mark to see if it is still a straight line, if it has changed, take the prop to press out the hub and press in a new one.
