92 Bayliner with alpha 1 mercruiser in/out board stops going while 3/4 throttle

Then, makes zing sound and completely stops going forward. Tried putting in gear to go forward and it kills the engine. Tried forward two more times with same result. Tried reverse and same thing. Fuel does not seem to be the issue...had upper gears replaced two years ago. Could it be lower gears or lower shift cable? Can the lower shift cable go out while moving like that? I've heard it can from some people, and others say it only does when starting out.

The boat is still running...try to put in gear and kills the motor...starts first crank and idles fine...try to put in gear and kills engine...does this twice in forward and reverse...shut boat off and someone tows us back to shore.
