I think I blew my voltage regulator while revving my engine. Not too much rev, but
I was testing my cab after I cleaned it.

My main fuse blew, and another when I replaced it.

I got my ohm meter and saw that indeed something was shorted to ground.

I traced it to my voltage regulator and removed it. Sure enough I measure 0 ohms
from the red lead to the body of the regulator. Someone please correct me if I am
wrong, but I believe that means it is bad.

The numbers on the regulator are 854414 and 2888.

When I google 854414, I seem to turn up a lot of results for CDI Mercury Voltage Regulator
and the picture looks the same.

Looks like this may be a fairly common part and the price varies from around $150 to $200.
Anyone have a suggestion for a good source?

Thanks,

Tom Travis

I ordered a new regulator/rectifier. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Only reason I can think of for overreving causing problems is something coming apart. maybe the lighting coil had something get into it
You should never rev a motor in neutral
