Hello, just wondering if someone could give some helpfull info on this issue I'm having. I recently own a used boat with 454 BBC and had an issue with the engine shutting down on me first time out with a popping nose and a rubbery smell that followed at about 25mph. I tried cranking the ingnition but it wouldn't even crank or make any type of starting nose. I hauled it back home and tried it again 1 hour later then it started right up with no issues. I checked the drive F/R and shifted fine. Ran the engine for 10minutes again with no issues. Could this be a cab or sensor issue? Thanks Dave

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard Dave,... Which 454,..?? Vintage,..?? Carbed,..?? Efi,..?? Mpi,..??

The poppin' noise, I'd think mighta been detonation, from fuel starvation,... Check, 'n change the fuel filters...

The rubbery smell,... Possibly the coupler, or exhaust parts burnin' up from lack of water flow,..??

When it didn't start, did it turn over at all,..?? Spark,..?? Fuel,..??
No clickin',..?? No Nothin',..??

Thanks...looking forward on learning more about boating. It's actually a power boat Black Thunder 32' that I'm trying to restore. I did change the fuel/water,oil filter, oil and plugs but haven't taken it out on the water yet. When it didn't start it didn't turn over at all. Didn't do nothing at all no clicking no nothing. But like I mentioned after I got it home 1 hour later it started right up with no issue.. Also it's a carbed motor not sure of the year but I'm sure it's not the original engine. The boats a 93 model.

Ayuh,... My 1st guess on that would be the keyswitch,....

Otherwise, a good sandin', 'n cleanin' the wirin' ends in the startin' circuit might be in order,...
Don't forget the Grounds....

Got some pictures of it,..??
