let me start of by saying i am not a mechanic and i probably will end up at my boat mechanic but i want to give it a shot if i can. Id love to have the boat on the lake for the 4th but all the mechanics are obviously tied up just a week before.
First problem, the engine overheats. I noticed this today while trying to adjust the idle. i always thought i had a faulty thermostat because it goes to 220 then back down to 140 back up to 220 back down etc, and not all the gauges work properly so i just thought it was that. While adjusting the idle today i noticed the hoses around the motor were really hot. I gave the engine some throttle in neutral, noticed the hoses instantly got much cooler and the temp came right down. The engine seems to overheat while in the lower RPM's or going at headway speed. From a little reading on here i think may be something with the impeller? No one has ever pointed out to me to not start the motor with the drive fully trimmed up, which i always do at the boat ramp. i thought as long as the water intakes were under water i was fine. is there anything that i can check and possibly replace without being an expert? This issue wouldnt keep me out of the water for the 4th because i live on a very small lake and can keep the motor cool with a little revving etc, but i thought i would ask while i am here.
The main issue i was trying to fix today was the shifting issue. The boat goes into reverse and back into neutral without and problems. it seems a "little" tougher than usually but still doesnt cause any issues. The issue is it gets stuck in forward drive. When i shift the boat into drive, everything is normal, engine does it cut out thing to allow the shift, then i can drive without and problems. When i put the handle back into neutral, the engine just stays in drive at pretty much an idle, even though the handle is locked in the neutral position. If i try to pull the handle back into reverse while it is stuck in drive, it wont go back, its like it hits a wall. If i tug it back a little and wiggle it, i can get it to come out release from gear and sit in neutral. I called my mechanic and he told me the engine could be idling too high. I noticed there was 2 adjustments for the cables from the handle on the starboard side and one near the carb on the port side. After about a half hour of no change, i realized a screw with a spring right under the air cleaner. This actually got my rpm's down under 1000 at idle (dont know how accurate gauge is) but it didnt help the shifting issue. Any tips? What can i check? does anything just need to be cleaned/lubed? im not sure if i should be going counter clockwise or clockwise or adjusting the starboard side or port side cables.
I tried my best to explain the problem, if any more information or test are needed let me know. I have the boat in the driveway and i do have muffs for it.
Thank you for your time, i really appreciate it. if it must go to the mechanic (which it probably will for the overheating) thats ok. Im hoping i can just make some adjustments or something for the shifter though.
