1996 40 hp Merc 2 stroke Shift issue after powerhead removal

After removing the power head for motor mount replacement and lower end for water pump impeller. The forward and reverse gears are reversed. I am stymied by this. Very irritating when you are in forward gear but propeller spins in reverse and vice versa. Any Ideas as to what happened and how to repair?
