Wellcraft St Tropez 1985, 10,500 weight 32' twin 454's, would like to know suggested WOT range. Tuned up buddies boat last week new, points, rotor, cap set timing. Went for run and reached at WOT 4500 rpm, buddy claimed never went over 4,000rpm before. He now concered (me too), this is too high and why the increase with a tune up. I used meter for dwell as always 30deg dwell and 10deg BTDC on timing.

You will need to check the specification for the exact engine . . . but 4500 RPM sounds like it is in the range for a 'standard' 454. the 'magnum' versions tend to go more towards 5K RPM.

Howdy,

It should be in your owners manual.

I have a 1997 454 and the rated WOT range is 4200-4600 with the rev limiter set at 4700. I believe yours also has a max RPM of 4600.
But I don't think you have any rev limit protection. Newer MPI models have a max RPM of 5000.
Mercury has always recommended selecting PROP pitch such that max RPM is achieved at WOT with the boat loaded where you'll run it most of the time.

I would say that 4500 is right where you want to be at WOT.

Sounds to me like you did a good tune up.
Generally, if an engine runs BETTER when your done working on it, you did it right!!

Stop worrying and start enjoying your friend's now better boat!
It's probably never been adjusted properly since he owned it!

As said above, look in the manual for your specific drive, but in general marine gas engines (i/o and inboard) usually WOT between 4200 and 4600 when they are running correctly and the drive behind them is setup right.
Most electronic ignition marine engines will rev limit at appx 4800-5000. With points ignition there is no rev limiter. (Again, i/o and inboard)

Hope this helps

Perfect. Wouldn't be concerned until you see 4800+. Then concider a prop change.
