Hi Guys!

I have learned so much from reading your forums over the last 2 years about boating and boat maintenance, that I decided to skip the marina and try completing some minor restoration on my own! My first project was to replace the rotted wood in the forward seat cushion inside the cuddy. Well, that went so well I decided to do this gunwale repair. I have a ton of pictures of my progress so far. I also made a light mechanical drawing of the wooden structure o put in here once I clean it up so you guys can use it. One thing I noticed, is that the inside of the gunwale is full of plywood, that is in great shape, to remove it I would have to do some major damage to the boat hull cap. However, some of the screw holes have pulled out from wear and tear, I was going to fill them with Marine Tex, and drill them out and re-tap some threads in there so the new interior piece will pull in nice and tight. Do any of you think this is a good idea?

I'll post some more pictures of my progress once I figure out how to shrink the file sizes.

mcelella...

You might want to drill a oversized hole in the plywood where the screws have pulled out and replace with a bung. Some epoxy thickened with cabosil, to a mayonnaise consistency, placed in the hole and smeared all over the bung will hold it in place. Once cured, sand it down and redrill the bung to accept the screw.

Re: Interior Gunwale Repair on 1984 Bayliner 1950 Capri Cuddy

Here is tonight's progress. I can't believe what a slow process this is, but it is coming out as I had hoped. Unfortunately, I am reusing the original vinyl, which has 'stretch marks and holes' from previously installed fixtures, so I am going to reinstall those fixtures. In the end I guess it isn't that bad keeping it the way it originally was, but, it would be nice to have some new stuff... Maybe someday.

Here it is all done and ready to re-install into the boat and put the fixtures back on!

Maybe I'll put the picture on later. I can't seem to upload the picture into the forum at this time.

Maybe if you scroll up CILO? There attached in the text. Maybe they only show up on my side?275.jpg Anyway, if you can see this one, this is the finished product. I just re-installed it in the boat last night. I love my old boat!
