I have a 97 40hp Yamaha and left dock fine but when got about 1/4 to 1/3 throttle it seemed to drop back to neutral... when I backed throttle to idle speed, prop rotated but stopped again when I increased back to 1/4 throttle... also, water pump quit. Does this sound like a lower gear problem? Not sure what to do...

Water pump is attached to drive shaft, which is splined to crankshaft of motor.
If drive shaft stopped rotating then you may have broke drive shaft or stripped the splines.

Could be you just spun the hub in prop, but that would not stop water pump
