I don't know where to post this but I guess this is good place for now.

My family dropped off a 228 MerCruiser(SeaRay) at my house. They told me the whole lower deck was out, after doing a little but of research I doubt this is the truth. I think it's just the prop.. But I'm new to boats so help me out here..

Here's a pic of the engine..:

Here's a picture of the lower deck...well lower deck pieces...:

Re: 228 MerCruiser--SeaRay

Welcome to iboats.

It does look to be in sad sad shape.

iboats sells entire replacement outdrive units http://www.boatmotors.com/motorparts/?*******=294343648&session_id=459095111

Yes it does, but I've already checked your sales and 1500 is just not what I can spend on this boat right now.. Is there a guide to re-assemble this lower unit?

I've worked on jet ski's for one to two years.. So I have some experience with working with things..

Any help is appreciated..!

I think the "family" is right. All of those parts are rusted as all get out. Why do you think they will be okay to re-use?

You are right. But I can replace parts.. just not the whole lower deck. And I plan to, but I need to know how to reassemble it..

Ok, those are reference only parts then :)

Adding the price of all of those and the races inside the housing and taking care of corrosion inside, then any special tools, the final bill may make the replacement drive price not so out of the ball park.

Good luck to you, you will learn a lot and hopefully end up with a usable boat on the cheap, or a reasonably priced fix for them (not sure what you meant by "dropped off".)

Find a used outdrive. Abandon that rusted stuff before you get too deep into it. You can usually find used outdrives for about 1/2 the cost of new. Then, spend $100 on seal kits and an impeller kit and gear oil and pressure test the unit.

Are you even sure the engine is any good? If you spend a bunch of $$$ on the outdrive, and the motor is toast or failing, you're going to be into it for an awful lot. What about the deck, stringers, transom, etc? Have they been checked for rot?

Seriously - get the FULL Picture before spending any $$$.

The boat itself is in great shape, the stringers are good-don't want the outdrive trying to ride with me. And yes it has been checked for rot, and the family pretty much gave it to me, as they thought it was trash cause the lower unit was out. And where do you suggest I could get a used outdrive? Thanks.

Craigslist, Ebay, check with local marinas.

OK, thanks for the help.. Also just a second check the manual listed above would tell me how to reassemble that drive right?

I hear nothing but horrible things about the aftermarket manuals. The factory manual is probably available for download. Post up in the appropriate outdrive forum here, and ask for help, and I'm sure somebody will post.
