lower end

hey how do you get a new lower end unit in nuetral? this a 1988 searay 100 hp i bought a new lower end unit and as i was installing i noticed this seems to be in reverse. it turns prop counter clockwise while turning shaft and clicks in clockwise no shaft movement.the shifting gear moves maybe 90 degrees where would forward , nuetral , reverse positions be on this lower end gear be... please help

turn the little shifting rod at the back of the lower unit, while turning the prop. in forward while turning the prop it will make a clicking sound. when turning the shifting rod and you find the neutral spot the prop will turn without making any noise. when you get it in neutral leave it there. and put the controller up at the driver seat in neutral as well. then bolt the lower unit back on, and adjust the cables to fit and you should be good to go. hope this helps.
