Hi
My friend (that dosen't own a boat but is young enough to have had to take the safety course) said that in order to overnight on the chesapeake bay you need a uscg auxillary license, and to go out more than 3 miles on the ocean you need another type of license. I searched uscg and dont see anything. I also checked MD's DNR site and it dosent mention any of that. is there another "lower" license besides Captians License that I would need to go out and have fun tubing skiing fishing and swimming with friends and family or is my MD boat registration enough? I am exempt from the safety course but have been boating for years so i know what im doing, just wondering if i needed alicense this whole time or if its a new reegulation or is my friend misimformed. thanks for any help you may have.

Do I have to get a Maryland boating safety education certificate (Maryland boater's license)?

All persons born on or after July 1, 1972, must have in their possession a certificate of boating safety education to operate a numbered or documented vessel (including personal watercraft) legally on Maryland’s public waters. The certificate is valid for the lifetime of the person to whom it is issued.

You need a certificate that you took an on-line course and passed the test.

Thanks for the quick reply! Like I said I'm exempt from the safety education (born before '72) are you implying that i dont need any other certs to go on the ocean or overnight on the bay?

You dont need anything else.

Unless you charter or your asking people to split the cost as a condition of them going out with you. ;)

BE carefull on the bay,. weather can change in a hurry. My grandfather fell overboard and "dun got drowned" in the BAY now he is buried in the FOREST LAWN cemetary VA. How long is your SHIP? When i am out of sight of land, i like to be in 65+ footer. TT

Seems a bit excessive.

Hey me too--have a grandfather buried in "FOREST LAWN cemetary VA" as well as dozens of relatives and ancestors, all of whom went out on the bay in small boats and none of whom drowned.

Yes, the bay, like any open body of water, can get rough when the weather turns. Sounds like the OP is inexperienced in boating and the bay. He needs to consult the locals about boating there in his boat (a 21' CC is a good and popular boat for that) and if going in the ocean, know about the inlets he uses (lower bay opening to ocean is no issue). he also needs to know where to overnight; you shouldn't just plop down an anchor in the middle. Try tidalfish.com but speak to humans, too.

Ahoy H.C. small world! internet sure brings the world and information into ones home. Have not been down to NOR.F. or NPN in many years. Yes,your advice is very sound. I used to commercial fish for salmon on a couple seine boats 65ft. but also fished on the "OUTSIDE" on a much bigger ship for hake. In heavy seas, a 100 + footer feels verrrrry small. That being said, my avaitar is the marine vessel TEESHU II. named for the original tug TEESHU that went down in a storm 1/4 mile from shore, assisting a freighter in distress at POWEL RIVER B.C. all hands lost, except for the skippers son, a 12 year oldMAN. several books on it. check it out on line. nice day, think i will just launch in local lake a few minutes away. BE SAFE, HAVE A SAFE SUMMER ON THE WATER. T.T. aka GLENN:) p.s. grandfathers name EDWARD TOBIAS PURCELL.

You don't need any other license. You will need a fishing license if you are going to fish, otherwise nothing. I have been cruising and overnighting on the Bay for over 50 years.
