My old reliable 35 HP Mercury that has never let me down is starting to give me trouble.
1987 35HP Mercury Outboard s/n: 0B139/12
It is not wanting to go into reverse. I lubed the shift cable and it got better. It will go into reverse fine on the trailer with the hose and earmuff hooked up. (however there is obviously no load on the prop) But when I try and back off the trailer (where there is a load on the prop) it grinds and makes a awful noise. If I can get it to go into reverse and don't get it much throttle it will usually stay there enough to get the boat off the trailer. It has been getting worse each time.
I don't have any problems with the forward gear.
Any suggestions as to possible causes?
Thanks much!!
Andrew
