Looking through the manual, one section says the order is
1-top starboard
2-top port
3-middle starboard
4-middle port
5-bottom starboard
6-bottom port

another section has it reversed
1-top port
and so on.

which is it? Enough hands have been in my engine that I'm not sure if it's wired right.

Symptom, rough idle, won't get over 4000 rpm - real slow out of the hole.

If you look close at the block you will see one of the cylinders is clearly the top one. That is #1, and it should be on starboard side. Firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6. take a compression test and a spark test.
