Hi,

I bought a new to me boat this spring and have got a problem that I'd like some help with. When I bought the boat, the previous owner left me with a nasty little surprise of one of the fuel tanks having really bad gas in it. The other fuel tank had a leak in the lines so I was drawing air through it. Since then, I've drained that bad tank and replaced all fuel lines on the boat. I figured I might have some motor problems from accidentally running that gas through but I was hoping not. When it happened, the motor died and I was able to start it and idle back to the dock.

The boat has two motors on it, a main and a kicker. The kicker is a mercury 9.9 carb that started hard the next few trips but now runs very well.

The main motor is a 95 200hp 2.5 liter mercury xri. It ran fine the first couple of times out after that episode but now has some problems. It bogs down after being run for 15-20 minutes when I try to throttle up. If I put the motor into neutral and throttle up a couple of times the motor then runs fine for 5 minutes or so under load but starts to bog down again. I'm thinking maybe some of the injectors are clogged, or there's other filters I don't know about but was hoping someone here could help.

Things I've done:

1. Drained the gas tanks and filled the clean tank with gas and seafoam mix (haven't used the dirty tank since draining it)
2. Changed the fuel filter/ separator in the motor
3. Changed all the plugs
4. Have run seafoam in the gas for about 6 trips which is probably a total of 3 hours of run time on the big motor.

Thanks for your help.

Re: 1995 200hp mercury problems

Try squeezing the primer bulb when the engine begins to bog. If it picks up then the fuel pump is suspect. When the engine begins to bog look at the primer bulb. If it is being sucked flat the pickup in the tank is plugged or thee is a restriction in the line between the primer bulb and the tank. Could be trash in the anti-siphon valve if the tanks have one.

Thanks for the help. I forgot to mention that I checked the bulb while it was bogging and the bulb was rock hard. Tried to squeeze it more to help and the motor didn't change one bit. What really confuses me is the whole rev it without it being in gear and then it runs fine for a while......
