hi guys i've got an '82 140 its been sitting for the last 3 years due to needing repairs (no time or no $) anyway short st ory long i went to start it after making the repairs to the lower unit and no spark. So my question is how do i check the breaker points? i've gone through the manual and it doesn't expain it or im missing it. i went throug the adults only sticky and i was able to narrow it down the the points ,but how do i set the dwell (also not in the manuali think) if anyone could direct me that would be great!

After setting for 3 years, put in new points and condenser. The points get corroded and glazed over and don't make contact. Cleaning only helps for a short time. Basically, give it a complete tuneup. Set the point dwell, then timing.
If you look up in the stickies (first threads in the forum) there is info on troubleshooting and repairing points ignition systems.

Dwell is not set,per se but is determined by the gap of the points and is expressed in number of degrees usually 28-34 with a point gap of .022

Personally, I never set points with a feeler gauge. I have always used a dwell meter (analog) and set the dwell while cranking the engine over and watching the meter.

One alternative, get a pertronics electronic ignition and enjoy faster starts, better fuel economy, and better performance that never needs maintenence! A little more expensive, but easy install.....
