89 capri 3.0l omc noise

I have a 89 Capri 1950 with a 3.0 omc and runs hot on acceleration and starts a random rattle like a pop can bouncing around. When i slow down engine cools and noise is not there, once engine is ran for about an hour unit wants to stall when indeling. Any ideas would helpfull.

Check your timing. Kinda sounds like maybe detonation.

You need to find out why it's overheating. Start with a new impeller. Detonation can be caused by an overheat, so if you continue to run the engine in an overheat condition you're risking permanent damage to the engine.

Replaced impeller, cage and housing. Cage spun in housing so only about a third of water was making it to the engine. Will test on water later today, thanks for the help!
