I just got finished doing maintainance on my outdrive......water pump, seals, new gear lube, etc.....
I greased the u-joints......the grease in the gun was "trailer wheel bearing grease"....

Is this grease acceptable? Is there a special grease recommended?

I know it's an answer you weren't looking for, but what does the service manual call for?

Re: U-Joint Grease

Merc has out a grease called by the odd name of "Ujoint and gimbal bearing lubricant"
The picture below is from their site.
The reason for it, is some of the grease types Mercruiser has, like spline grease and 24C, will cause the bearings to slide instead of rolling like they were designed. Which causes them to wear out quicker.
I would guess there are several greases out that works for bearings like the ujoints and gimbal bearings. I just don't know which ones they are and I do know that Merc has already done the research on which is best for them.
