I am in process of repairing my cunado's 25902D (1969 25hp) and the rear bolt on the start recoil unit (over flywheel) is stripped out (1/4"x20x 1) and I would like to drill and tap for a 5/16"x18x1 replacement. Has anyone ever tried this and/or is there a better way? Thanks.

Helicoil! I just stripped the thermostat cover on my Johnson and the helicoil worked like a charm. I must say I considered doing the exact same thing though. So long as there's enough residual metal around the hole I don't see why tapping wouldn't be acceptable. Remember you're going to have to drill out the piece the bolt is holding too! It needs to have enough metal left as well.

Don't forget to use stainless hardware if you're switching to 5/16ths.

I still like heli-coils. Keeps it orginal and they're easy to install.
