HOW TO PULL THE MOTOR ? 1970 IMP OMC I/O small block

Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm not a "boat guy". I need to pull the motor on my 1970 IMP 23ft with OMC I/O. Any time I've worked on this thing I cuss it because I can't get at the motor other than the top. Changing the fuel pump was a nightmare without 4 foot arms.

The motor (small block chevy) locked up and I need to pull it. I want to do as little inside the boat as possible. Can I pull the outdrive from the back and take out the rubber boot and pull the rest of it as a unit? If I have to disconnect anything from the back of the motor I'm going to saw out all the seating so I can get to it(I dunna want to do that if possible). Yanking it out once it's lose I can deal with. I'm just looking for the path of least resistance as far as getting it free of the boat.

If it was a car, the motor would already be on the engine stand.

Thanks

I've never taken mine outta' the boat, but to answer part of your question ... yes, you can take the stern drive off, remove the boot and then you should be able to get the rest out as a single piece. Though with the boot off, you may be able to take the intermediate housing off pretty easily while it's in the boat.

SOUTHKOGS.......................... Thank you Sir, just the info I was looking for. I hated to venture ahead without some idea of what I was doing.

I had the cover off the motor changing it back to mechaical fuel pump from electric and got stymied on the project and came back to it 4 weeks later to discover I had left the engine cover off and it had rained in my motor and locked it up, frozen solid. I've done dumber things, just can't remember when.

I had water in the cylinders when I pulled the plugs. The rings either flash rusted to the cylinder or I a bent a rod when I hit the starter on a watered cylinder.............. either way it's gotta come out of there. I have soaked the cylinders with rust inhibitor with no success........arrgh, I'm my worst enemy sometimes.

Thanks again

Do you have a manual for your drive/engine?

Yes, I have the original 1970 manual that came with the boat. Its pretty complete but leans toward maintenance( there was no "yank the motor" chapter LOL) I think all the pics I need will be in there,

If this is a stringer drive just pull the drive and and remove the boot from the intermediate and pull everything out together, much easier if you have the room.

THIS manual doesn't have a "pull it" section either (might be the same one you have), but it does look at the mounts for the SelectTrim which might give you a couple of hints. The link is at the bottom of the thread. NWRedneck posted a bunch of other great stuff in there for us weirdos trying to keep Stringers alive :)

More information HERE if you're new to the drive and boat.

If you're going to do all of the work to rework the engine, it might be a good time to take a good look at the ball gear while you're at it. Dunno' how chewed up yours is, but it might be a good time to get it.

That was GREAT info!!!! My manual with the boat is labeled "TUFM-19E" which corresponds to the chart. I think I am armed enough go after it now. Be'n a newkid at this I was trying to stay away from the outdrive as much as possible and just deal with what I know about. This helps alot.

Thanks guys

I'm pretty "two-thumbed" when it comes to mechanics. The outdrive on the Stringer has been pretty easy to deal with (fairly straight forward stuff). I would do a reality check/cost benefit analysis before I did a restore project with a Stringer drive (and probably won't buy another boat with an OMC), but I'm doing rather well with the one I've got ... and actually like the way it works.

Being a "first boat" guy, I probably won't ever do an inboard again. Just too miserable to work on. The cost of a large outboard aside, it's just too easy to bolt on a fresh bullet for me to ever think of the I/O set up again.

Ayuh,.... May be,... :D,....

I'm just pointin' out that yer Hatin' I/Os is based on somewhat false assumptions...

Personally,... I'm just the opposite,...
I can replace my 300hp motor for $1500. or so....
a 300hp Outboard is more like $15,000...

I'm also a diehard Mercruiser guy, who's still single at the 28th anniversary of my 29th birthday, a week or so ago...
though I do have a perfect woman who, after 10 years, still won't go away....;) :D

Good Luck with yer stringer, 'n have a Great weekend,....:)

Re: HOW TO PULL THE MOTOR ? 1970 IMP OMC I/O small block

... I agree with Bond-o about I/O vs. OB, and my not buying an OMC next time is not to say that I won't try to keep this one going for quite some time. I really actually like the drive and the boat, better even than some of the newer stuff that I've run on.

That said, how easy are your seats and dog-house to get out? I can actually have the back of my boat bare in about 1/2 hour ... and then it's pretty easy to get around the GM 6 that's back there. I don't even cuss that much anymore yanking the tilt motor. There's not much I couldn't do with the engine still in the boat.

I typically yank the back seats and the doghouse for winter storage. That way I can work on little projects little bits at a time in the evenings.

Re: HOW TO PULL THE MOTOR ? 1970 IMP OMC I/O small block

you have to unhook the shift cable and pull the outdrive off then the ball gear attachetd to the intermediate housing comes off then the 22 hole rubber boot then seperate the 1/2 in bolts that hold the engine tight to the intermediate hsng. also the flywheel protective metal plate. do not remove the lag screws from the rear motor mounts but remove the front two motor mt lag screws disconect wiring harness tilt motor plug. fuel line etc.. then either take to a shop with a forklift or if u have a hoist slide that engine forward until the shaft comes through the intermediate housing and then using the hoist pull that engine out. Man get a book for sure. good luck
