I have an old johnson 35 seahorse, I believe its a 56 or 57 it runs great except lately when i am speeding up it will lose all power to the prop and the motor will rev like its in neutral, as soon as I throttle back down it will engage the prop again and start to go. If I throttle up really slowly it will keep power to the prop but it seems to be getting worst. I have no real exposure to outboard motors and especially not one this old. If anyone has any ideas that might help or if you know what the problem is I would appreciate any help you could give.
Thanks Tyrel

Sounds like a spun hub.

Draw a line across the prop and hub, run it till you hear it rev, then inspect your line. If it is no longer straight, she is spun, and will need to be rehubbed or a new prop bought.

I pulled the prop off to look at how it all works and it has a shear pin that goes through the shaft and the hub (I'm guessing that is the cap at the end of the shaft) has a cotter pin through it that is though the shaft as well, so maybe I just don't understand how it all works because it is all connected together by the shaft which is still all intact, or maybe I don't know what the hub is so I don't understand fully what you are talking about, I'm sorry for my ignorance on the subject but any further help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Tyrel

The pin is a "drive pin". It is what connects your prop to the propshaft.

The nose cone/cotter pin keep the prop from coming off of the drive pin. Tighten the nose cone by hand, then continue tighening with a wrench until a hole is lined up for the cotter pin.

The hub is inside the prop. It is what protects your motor when you hit a submerged log or rock, so that it is spun/damaged, saving more expensive/critical items. It is the sacrificial lamb if you will.

Okay, That makes sense, thanks HighTrim, Is there anything I can do to fix it? or is it going to require a new prop?
I'm wanting to get a new motor, so I would like to sell this one, is there a niche for this old of a motor?

If it's a good runner, recently services--its worth $200-$400, maybe a bit more if the paint/decals are in real nice shape. If its a parts motor, its worth about $50-$100. The reason its worth so little is there are litterally thousands of these old motors still around and its very easy to find them pretty cheap. You can get a replacement prop for it--if that is what it is. Search google or ebay for "pin drive propeller". The correct "stock" propeller was probably a 10.75" x 12 pitch. Anything real close would work like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Evinrude-Johnson-10-1-2-x-12-Aluminum-Propeller-012024-PJ-32-Pin-Drive-115-12-/221041500693?pt=Boat_Parts_Accessories_Gear&hash=item337719a215&vxp=mtr
