Mercruiser 5.7 EFI stall

Engine serial number:0L012414 Bravo 3 Serial number:0L167097

Engine starts first time and idles.

When forward or reverse is selected, engine stalls, there is a noticeable change in the engine noise for about two seconds before it stalls.

Any recent work? first time out for the year?

Black or blue smoke?

What type of change in engine noise (knocking, racing etc)

Gear shifter if not installed correctly can kill it.
if the first time of the year, could have problems with fuel injection , bad fuel, or even vacuum leaks. (rough, knocking)
Could be freeze issues in the outdrive.

Remember, even a completely useless motor can idle, it take a lot more to actually apply power.

Sounds like a shift interupter adjustment needs to be made to me.

Thank you for the reply's.

I sounds like the change in pitch of the engine note may be down to it sucking in air, hope this helps with the diagnosis.
