gear shift upgrade

I have a volvo penta 4.3GL with cobra SX leg. According to the manual I have there is a recommended upgrade to the gear shift on the leg made up of a few extra washers. I have bought them, but before installing, was wondering if anyone has made the upgrade and has some feedback.<br />Boat is a Wellcraft 21SL.

Do you have problems with the drive not shifting all the way into gear? You can check by pulling the back cover of the drive. Shift it forward and reverse and see if the lever moves all the way into gear. If not then you may need the extra washers. The upgrade was for use when someone used the real cheap cables that had a lot of slop between the inner and outer part of the cable. By using the washers it took care of the extra play in the cables.

forward is fine, but sometimes fails to engage in reverse. the cable is quite new and i have adjusted it before, so i thought i may as well have a go at the upgrade. cable is from teleflex marine and is good quality.
