2004 Bayliner Bowrider Merc 3.0 I/O Steering cable coupling

I am working on removing the steering cable on this boat. I have removed the backmount from the helm. I have diconnected the steering rod from the motor by removing the cart pin and pin. My problem is the coupling on the cable seems to be frozen to the support tube(hope this is correct name, the tube with the threads on it.) any ideas on how to get these apart as the new cable will have a new coupling on it.
