Help, I think my dip stick is too short!!

I have a Mercruiser 170 3.7 in a boat we just purchased. We over filled it with oil and it came spewing out the dip stick and valve cover vent. Now I am wondering if my dip stick is too short. Could it possibly be the wrong one or bent? Does anyone know how long they are suppose to be?

If you filled it so full that it came out 0f the valve cover, then you have WAY overfilled it... Those engines only take about 5 litres of oil to fill an empty sump... How much did you put in?
