1984 mercury lower unit

I have a 1984 Mercury 50hp and trying to replace water pump kit.
Does any one know how to disconnect the shift linkage to separate the lower unit?
I have watched the videos but they all show a coupler. Mine does not have one.

You been looking at Johnnyrude videos? Shift shafts on Mercs are slip fits. Remove 5 nuts and a hidden bolt and the gearcase should slide off. Sounds like you need a service manual.
