I was reading an early post and noticed that someone said to use 30W engine oil for the lower unit for a Volvo outdrive. My manual tells me to use gear oil rather than engine oil, of course my manual if for a 1992 290DP. Should i be using 30W engine oil or stick to the gear lube? "Volvo now recommends straight 30W, but any engine oil will work when it comes right down to it." or was this statement just for the 270 or 280?

That's great that you have a manual for a DP, but what drive do you have?

all tyhe DP's require synthetic GL-5 for warrenty issues. after the warrenty is out its still reccomended but if you own it you can run veggie oil in it if you wish. I still reccomend sticking with the synthetic GL-5.<br /> some of the older SP units ran 30W, used to be the gear oil bottles had a little chart.

The manual is for the drive, a 290dp, sorry that came off i little confusing i guess.

GL5 Synthetic for the DP's.<br /><br />30W is for the 270, 280, 290 Single prop drives only.

Thanks for clearing that up Don S, I take literally alot that is said here and wanted to get that cleared up. Have you ever heard of filling from the bottom of the unit on the 290DP's till it comes out the fill hole you were speaking of earlier, not the dip stick hole?

what oil in the volvo penta sx drives? 30wt motor oil like the others?

You do not have a 270, 280, 290 Single prop drive, you have an SX drive. The SX drive takes Gl-5 Synthetic gear lube.

thanks you guys are the greatest on giving advice. i thought i read where all single prop used moter oil. thanks for strighting me out before i refilled mine.
