Hey guys

Just snagged a what a though was a 1977 9.9 from the numbers on transom plate. Powerhead numbers told a diffrent story, 1982 15HP. Classic bad idle/ carb job motor for $100. :)

Transom Plate# : 10724A Crowley says 1977 9.9HP Evinrude

Powerhead# :E10SELCNS Crowley says 1982 15HP Evinrude

Safe to say Im rocking out 15 Horses?

Now I need a recoil spring so the rope resets back it and a carb kit. EDIT

Howdy, Damian.

Crowley is wrong or you misunderstood them.

The model number, E10SELCNS is a 1982 9.9HP Evinrude.

In 30 years it is very possible that she suffered considerable shadetree engineering, including replacing the transom clamp with a part from a 1977. It would have fit.

I would call your outboard a 1982 9.9HP.

Please do not solicit private transactions in the forum. You have been around here long enough to know that is forbidden.

Sorry JB , wasn't even thinking and didn't mean anything by it.
Well is the 1982 Head with a 1977 mid/lower a direct fit? Iv'e known the previous owner for awhile and he got the motor like that. He ran it for along time before selling to me. Seem who ever worked on the motor before and did the transplant turns a mean wrench.

tx1961whaler, Thanks for the all the info I need in one area. Can I get away with just an impeller? Or snag a kit for $30 more?

You can see how I was confused... I know enough to know that "E10" right off that bat it "should" be the 10hp(9.9). But when I typed it it in numerous places it came up as 1982 15hp.

Alot had it lumped in with the 15's.

Some say 10HP

The E10 along with your advice JB is making me think its a 9.9.

Thanks again,

I know you think its a 9.9 JB but Im not totally sold on it yet. Im not butting heads with ya JB just want to know what it is %110. I dont know if it has the tuned exhaust or the reed shims. But the carb is a diffrent story.
I think I have the 15HP carb on the head, the venturi is bigger and theres no brass "post" in the middle of the carb like on the 9.9 one.
Used this for some info and carb comparison, hopefully the guy knows what he's talking about.

Anyone have a 9.9 and/or a 15 carbs so you could post a picture so I can tell for %100 what I have?

More on the 9.9HP / 15HP hunt ....

Punch in E10SELCNS in the shop by model number box.

Also my opening for the carb on the head is HUGE compared to the restricted 9.9 (with or without that "rare" metal plate)

Starting to think its a 15HP. 2 guys and motor (475LBS!) , 15ft jon boat , 1 battery and some gear, 24MPH. And it needs a tune up. Carb/fuel kits. Shes a flat out beast for an old girl.

Really sux, I can have her turn key with $170 invested. Leaves room for a healthy flip ,but I'm a outboard "junkie" and love to grow my collection when I can. Decisions , Decisions , Decisions...

Thanks again guys !!!

You gave us a model number and an incorrect ID, Damian. I simply told you what the model number really means. I also cautioned you that some shadetree engineering probably took place.

Call it whatever you please.

Somebody could have put 15hp carbs on the 9.9, not like that's never been done before.

JB: Thank You for your help/time. I know you know your stuff, and I dont mean to make a wake.

RockRude: Yea that could be *but* I would think whoever did the transplant would have done the job %100 and put the tuned exhaust in and the reed shims to make it a 15hp as much as it could be. I mean If you have the head off, do the job %100. But then again "Dr.Frankenstein" could have worked on this motor for all I know.

Ive got the carb #388275 with a #54 jet in it. 1" inch opening in the back (7/8" opening for 9.9). Think its a 15hp carb.

Listen, Im not trying to bust anyone's balls here with all the questons. Im not after speed ( it is nice though), either way if I sell it or keep it I want to know what has been done and what hasn't. Plus I love to learn.

Thanks,

Re: New to me Evinrude 9.9 (15hp) conflicting numbers 1977/1982

Got all three kits for $72 shipped to my door from Iboats. I forgot about getting parts from here, quality parts at a "hell" of a price.

Thanks tx1961whaler for reminding me about it.

Thank you too JB.

One last thing Iv'e noticed, when I slowly turn the flywheel when it gets to a certain spot it will SLIGHTLY move the whole stator plate/assembly. I think it's the magnets giving resistance at a certain spot but I want to make sure this is normal.

So when I noticed it I tried to move the stator/plate assembly by hand. It has SLIGHT play too on the up and down , not side to side.

Is this normal and goes away under normal operating conditions? Or is there something that should be tightened down that is causing this "play"?

After that the sky is the limit with the other areas I got the "kits" for. She should be pissing like a race horse and idling like a clock when Im done with her. Hopefully the thermostat is okay, I hate digging in that area when certain motors make it a "mission" just to change the thermo out. Wish this motor would have a separate housing/plate area to replace the thermostat independently.

Thanks again,
DamianJP
