Hello New to site, fairly new to boating, and definitely new to rebuilding a boat.
So about a week ago i purchased this 88 bayliner from a friend. Which i new needed lots of cosmetic work. The engine starts up fine and it came with a trailer for $800. Basically the boat was free...

So im going to post a few pictures. Basicially i started to dismantle all the rotten wood. But i have a few concerns before i really start ripping this thing apart. #1 concern right now is how well supported is my engine on the transom. Do i need to remove it? the wood is so rotted that it doesn't seem like it even needs it to support it. But i don't want to assume anything.

Basically if I didn't live a stones throw away from the water i probably would have never wanted a boat. So im hoping this is the best way to go. If i do need to remove the engine on it to work on it. Whats the best way to go about that, im sure its got some weight to it.

You are in the right place. There are a lot of folk on here to help you go through what you are doing. I am not the expert to give advice on what you need but you can be your own best tool by reading reading and reading. Use the forum search and you will find quite a few bayliner resto's just like yours with lots of pics. The experts will chime in soon enough. Remember there is no such thing as a dumb question.

i don't mind doing the work. Still not worth the money in parts. wood/epoxy/vinyl/carpet/seats? I have no emotional attachment. Just figured it was still worth the $800 with the motor and trailer, and exterior was in decent shape.

Dude! Those pics look like something out of a horror movie!

That was a nice boat at one time, and for the money... where else are you going to get a brand new boat for under $3K?

Buying another hull you might get a little better, but prolly not much better unless you look for a very long time or just happen to luck into something which still takes time. By the time you spend looking around you'd have been able to put this boat back together new and be out on the water enjoying it.

thanks for the support. I do enjoy projects, even when the stress and **** me off while doing them i feel accomplished when i'm all done. Last year was chickens and building a chicken coop. This year is a boat. god knows what next year will bring

Anyone know about how much epoxy i will need. I was thinking of using west epoxy for the stringers and everything else thats on the bottom. The floor itself i was hoping to find a cheaper product to save some money any suggestions? or are they all about the same in pricing. West seemed a little top of the line to me. I would like to be able to afford the gas when its all said and done.

Also has anyone seen different floor plans for these boats? Its only a 6 passenger boat, but i figured there might be a better configuration.

First of all, poly resin will work just fine and it's way cheaper than epoxy. Secondly you can find the materials you need at USComposites.com. As far as a floor plan goes, you will have to gut this beauty in order to fix her. So, You can build her any way you want.

just looked way cheaper than the epoxy i was looking at. Poly resin is just as durable? is there a hardener that's needed? if not do you think 5 gallons is enough for the whole project? and how much gel coat do i need when done, or just get 5 gallons of that as well. And can you tell me which is the best fabric to get from them.
