Hi..I purchased a used bass tracker with a Mercury 40HP outboard last fall. I used the motor a couple times no problems. I started it for the first time this past April with ear muffs running water to check the motor and all was fine. Today I started to prepare for a weekend outing and the water was not coming out from the top of the motor. I am new with outboards and am not sure what to check or how. Any suggestions short of taking it to a marina would be appreciated. Maybe a clogged water pump? I ran the motor for about 5-10 minutes and shut her down after that. Maybe there is a quick fix?

any help is appreciated to a newbie...Thanks...Joe

Start the motor with the water on and take a plastic tube as you get with a spray can and poke it up the tell tale hole. Could be blocked. You can check with your hand on the head if there is an overheat problem.
