Hi,

I built a minimax 8' hydroplane about 30 years ago that I used to power with a 1981 9.8hp 2 stroke, which was sold in 1993 and replaced with a 20hp. The 9.8 was perfect from a weight perspective and pushed this little boat to near 30mph!

I've since tried the 20hp on the minimax, and it's too heavy, when I stand in the boat and have someone hand me the motor to install it, the back end sinks.

I'm looking around for a replacement 9.8, but was wondering if the 1986+ 9.9 2-stroke that Mercury replaced the old 9.8's with would work, or if it's going to be too heavy as well. To help me figure that out, could someone tell me the dry-weights on all 3 of these motors (short-shaft versions)?

Many thanks

Just a followup to my old thread here... Last summer I managed to find a like-new 1984 Merc 9.8 that had very little hours on it and was very well cared for. I stuck it on the back of the MiniMax and even though I've probably gained 25 or more pounds in the last 30 years, she still floats and flys across the water at a cool 25 mph!

Here's a pic:

Move the tilt pin to get some more speed.
Yep, I tried that, but any more and it porpoises like crazy.
Then next up Joe you'll have to work on that extra transom weigh to get more out of her.....:boink::tape::tape2::bolt::D hehe just kidding... Looks like fun... Thanks for sharing.:thumb:
