i have a 1987 sea ray with a mercruiser electric shift pn71919A1...the dc motor associated with it does not appear to be strong enough to move the outdrive cable far enough to engage it into gear..it is an intermittant problem.it does get a full 12 volts to motor .part is no longer available...does any one have any ideas?

Re: mercruiser electric shift problems

The motor is probably fine, 99% of the time the shift cable is bad causing the problem.

how could a bad cable cause the electric shift to not fully engage into gear..sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt...you can actually see the motor not turning the housing far enough for engagement...

A bad (Stiff, corroded, hard to move) cable will keep the electric motor from turning.
