Nasty scrapes on rocks - seeking easy non-cosmetic repair

Hi - and thanx for any patience required when thinking 'there are like 20 threads on this topic already!'. I imagine there are comments that are relevant here and I have looked around. I just can't tell whether this damage is not to worry about or might cause leakage. (I would be happy to flake off the chipped gelcoat and carry on if I could)

I have a mid 80's 17' Double Eagle (canadian V fiberglass ocean runabout) with a 60 hp efi merc that I am in my third year with. It is a blast and I have taken good care of it. Unfortunately, as I use it in the ocean, some underwater rocks seem to have attacked while I was doing about 20mph on my first trip out this year. (who knew underwater rocks moved like that!)

The bottom end of the merc is in a prop shop now getting the skeg repaired and prop hammered out. I am hoping that ends the repair issues for the engine. It used to look so perty!

Anyway, I thought that would be end of it but then I figured 'hey, what about the bottom of the boat?' and decided to look underneath (is on a trailer - didn't think to look before )

There are some nasty long scrapes - they look pretty much just like the gelcoat down to the glass but nothing to worry too much about - maybe? I know squat about fiberglass. However, along the strakes (I think they are strakes) the gelcoat has scraped off as if you had a good sturdy knife and dragged it along the 90degree corners - the gel has come off all along in little shards. My biggest concern - the strakes sort of end 3/4 of the way down the boat at a right angle and one of these 'corners' took what looks a little nastier whack sliding off the rocks. I am not worried about the cosmetics. It did look good before I got my hands on it  but the value is not in the boat at this point but rather the engine, kicker, sounder..... all that stuff I will switch over to another hull one day hopefully.

I need an opinion of whether this corner might be a problem. I would be happy to plug it with epoxy or something like that if possible as I just want to plug it from letting in water to the stringers and underneath if that might be an issue. Same along the strake edges that have been scraped raw - can i just patch it up without much fuss?

Here is an overly large pic

(Pushin it here! I just thought I would toss in this pic of the arse end of the transom. I think this is older damage but I don't recall it being quite as deep as this. Can I just build this up with expoxy or some substance too?? Can I ignore this as it seems to not be vulnerable to water?

I will have the lower unit and prop of the Merc back on Friday and was hoping to bolt it on and head out. Can I just do a quick and dirty to patch up this stuff?? I have given up on it being a beauty already!

thnx

Hello Boatty and welcome to Iboats :) ..

Well.. you need to grind out all of that crappy glass/gel stuff. So do that and post up some more pics. ( we dont have x-ray vision ;) )

Im gonna give you my best guess and say that your probably into a little bit of small Glass patchin..not putty.

But its not really that hard if your not worried about cosmetics.

YD.
