I have a 1982 Evinrude boat motor, I have recently replaced the shift and throttle cable. It goes into Neutral and Forward, when I put it inot reverse it makes a loud rattling noise, in the cable and in the throttle. It does not engages into reverse, is this caused by the shifter rode or the shifter cable? I put the same length cable and adjusted it the same way it came off the motor. When the motor is not running, the prop goes into neutral, when throttle is in neutral. When throttle is put into forward and reverse, the prop moves 3/4 of an inch left ot right. what can I do, to fix this problem?

The proper way to mount cables is to fit the cables to the motor. You want to start with the engine in neutral and the throttle closed (or idle). The controls need to be in neutral and idle control all the way down. Attach the each cable to the outboard (you might have to adjust the knurled adjustment knobs) so that they slip easily into place without moving the linkage on the outboard.
