Fumey engine compartment

So i have this project bayliner which happens to be my first boat. Its a 86 2150 br with the 5.0 volvo penta. I've pretty much gotten it back to a usable state which is mostly what im going for but i've noticed whenever i take the cover off of the engine i get overwhelmed with gas fumes. Is this normal? i know thats why you have the blower but i didnt think it was going to be that bad. Any help is appreciated.
