What a great find!

I can tell you it is not quite as old as you think. Very few Evinrude rowboat motors were made in 1909, 1910 was likely the first year of commercial production. Yours has a skeg, and likely the Evinrude logo lettering on the exhaust manifold, unlike the early versions.

By pics alone, and the fact that you believe it to be a model A, it is no earlier than 1915 2.0 hp. The model B`s in 1915 were 3.5hp.

Look underneath the flywheel where the knob would be for the serial number stamp.

By the way, where did you find it, would love the story!

not sure what vintage that one is, but i have a couple of newer ones (1928 and 32) and there are serial numbers stamped on the block.

Thats a great find! My dad had one that was similar but a few years older (I think) His had the knob on top of the flywheel to start it and as I recall it used a Ford model T ignition box that made of wood and was not physically attached to the motor except by the wires.
I searched high and low on the internet for images of old Evinrudes to try to find out the age and model and I figured it to be a 1911 model. The sad part of the story goes like this... When Dad died in 1989, his best friend (who helped him restore the motor in the 50s) asked if he could have the motor for sentimental reasons. Mom was reluctant to part with it so she suggested that she would loan it to him untill he no longer needed it (i.e. when he passed away) with the understanding that the motor would be returned to our family at that time. After this fellow passed away mom waited a few months and then asked his widow about retrieving the motor. The lady told mom that some of her husbands friends were helping her clean up around the house and that one of them took it. 20 years later and no sign of the motor! I would dearly love to have it back and would be willing to pay well over the market value but I'd have to find the current "Possessor" first.

HighTrim. you seem to be somewhat knowlegable about these old motors and your in my neck of the woods so to speak. If you ever see a 1911 or there abouts for sale or at a meet etc let me know, I'd love to see it.

Well, seeing as how Im a rabid collector, you have to get through first :)

My oldest motor is a 1914 Ferro Rowboat. If you did have a 1911, it is a real shame that you lost it. They are extremely rare nowadays. Any pics of it at all?

That's NOT an Evinrude. Going by the exhaust cutout on the side of the manifold, as well as the magneto advance lever, I would peg it as a Caille, c. late 19-teens - 1920 or so. It is a base model as the deluxe versions had a variable pitch propeller mechanism for forward and reverse. Could also be a Columbian, which was a re-badged Caille.

Don't have any useful information but that thing is awesome! I would have pegged it for an old homemade job if I saw it out and about!
