Which outdrive do I have

I have read through the sticky's on identifying my outdrive and after reading so much info on this forum things are starting to jumbled in my head..... :confused:

Early 70's Mercruiser 165 I-6 (forgot to get serial number)
Outdrive serial number is 5226297

I'm thinking it's an MC1 and wanted to make sure I ordered the right impeller kit for it (Sierra p/n 18-3217)

That's the kit for you. And if original you should have a MC-1. The important thing would be the lower water pump base which is different than the Alpha One, which is not included in that kit. You should have a Preload pin at the top of the splined shaft on the lower half of the drive.

If it's the first time your changing the impeller, would be a good idea to do the compete housing and all. IMHO

See the attached photo of each. Also notice that the MC-1 drive on the right has a rounded cavitation plate instead of the squared off one on the Alpha.

Ayuh,.... It's probably a very early MC-1, with the water port screw in the pump housing....

Or, if there's no water port screw, it's the later MC-1 drive...

Thanks guys!!! I don't think it has the pin since a friend was nice enough to say the prop was clear when it was sitting on a rock and we snapped the shaft (I had the mech. give it to me as a training tool for anyone who comes near my boat and to let them know that they'll be ponying up the $400 + labor the next time). ;) The housing and wear plate should be fine since I had it replaced just before I took it out last time (~2 years ago) and only ran it a couple hours. Gonna do it, myself this time, just as added insurance for the season.

Once again, You guys are awesome!!!
