I'm wondering what kind of lower unit oil I need it's for a 1976 johnson seahorse 35hp electric start

It's called "HiVis" 80/90w gearcase lube and states just that on the container. Available at Wal*Mart, K-Mart, various marine stores, your dealership, probably this site, etc.

It comes in a quart container which will be more than enough.

Yes, you could probably fill it at least twice with the quart container.
