2004, 40hp Merc ELPTO, While running on lake at top speed, tach became erratic and "died," motor continued to run fine. Upon stopping realized the starter motor was running. Working the ignition key add no effect. I disconnected the battery wire. Wires on right side of motor from harness, meet other wires including wires to what may be the starter selanoid all were zip tied together. The entire bundle was burned and melted and some wires shorted together.
