I have a 1979 evinrude 6hp, it's only been running on 1 cylinder, but now that's fixed. The power is back, but it smokes more than what I remember and the part under where the motor is gets really hot. Is this normal, water comes out the hole and also the big hole above where the prop is. Is this right? What is the correct setting for the rich/lean setting?

Re: Smoking and heat

When was the last time you replaced the water pump impeller?

"Most" fuel/air mixture settings start at 1.5 turns out from a gently seated position. Fine tuning can be performed on the water in gear at idle speed. (It will smoke a lot if you are running in a bucket.)

Turn the rich/lean needle valve clockwise until it seats (don't force it), then back it out counterclockwise 1+ 1/2 turns. Start the motor and let it warm up. Then turn the needle valve clockwise (slowly and in 1/8th increments) until the motor stumbles. Back it out about a quarter turn and you should be good to go. As far as the heat goes, the exhaust housing will get pretty hot but you should be able to touch it briefly without getting burnt. Also, running an outboard in a barrel will make it heat up faster than on the lake. My suggestion is, to replace the impeller and also the thermostat. Overheating an outboard is the quickest way to ruin it so, the cost of an impeller and a t-stat is money well spent and you can do it yourself.
