Starter Rebuild ...Still No Good?

Hey Everybody,

I have a '72 Johnson 85hp that I had the starter rebuilt on last year.
I accidentally burned it out cranking it over for too long with not enough cool down in between cranks.

Anyway, with the spark plugs out it cranks easily, and steadily, and sprays a mist of premix out the cylinders.

When I put the plugs back, the pinion gear jumps up intermittently and engages for no more than a few seconds at a time.
Needless to say I can't start the engine.

After I ruined the starter it behaved as described as above.
After the rebuild it behaved as described above.
Before I burned it out, it behaved normally.

So, does anybody know what did they most likely not do right when I had them rebuild it?
How can I tell what needs to be fixed?

Should I just order a new aftermarket starter? ($95)

Thanks!

P.S. Starter solenoid is new.

Check the battery connections for cleanliness. Check all the starter wiring connections. Bypass the solenoid by wiring the starter directly to the battery. This will prove the starter motor.

Cleaned all connections manually (spotless).
New battery with fresh charge.

I don't need to bypass the solenoid since the new one did not change the behavior of the starter.

Thank You though.

I guess I'm looking for advice as to what is wrong with the rebuilt starter.

If the rebuild shop didn't have the proper equipment to check out the armature and ect that may be the prob. Rebuilding does not just consist of cleaning up the commutator and putting in new brushes. I think the new aftermarket would be your best deal. And this time don't crank it so long. LOL

LoL, Yeah I know better...my emotions got the better of me at the time.

I think I might ask them to bench test it...that was my uncles suggestion.
Hopefully for free.

If that clears up what is wrong, and it is irreparable, then I'm gonna just get a new one.

Re: Starter Rebuild ...Still No Good?

Bench tests don't tell all especially if the armature has probs. I used to work in an auto-electric shop many years ago and got burned on two starter mtrs for 1963 Evinrudes for not checking everything properly. I found out how to do it properly after an a%^ chewing from my boss.
