Yamaha overheating safeguards

Will a 2005 2-stroke 90hp Yamaha automatically stop running before a faulty water pump can cause damage? I am thinking of purchasing a Sea Pro (2005) with the Yamaha which did not pee when first started. Later, the owner found a piece of shell at the exit fitting. He removed the obstruction and a steady stream of water started coming out.

My concern is that the engine may have overheated and caused internal damage that does not show. I will be taking a test ride Tuesday after Memorial day week end. Can anyone give me some advice? The boat is priced low @ $4,500 including trailer.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Yamaha overheating safeguards

Welcome to the forums,

You can run hours with a clogged peeing hole as it's just a visual indicator that WP is working. If WP was working properly at that time nothing to worry about. Larger engines does have security systems that slows rpm or probably shuts engine down if an overheat is detected so not to ruin engine severely.

Happy Boating
