Okay, Im new to boats, and Ive been wanting to get my family a boat. Its a 1990 stingray 536 zp. ITs in really good condition, expect for a few minor things. It hasnt been ran but once a year or so the past 4 years. and they wanted 5000, but got them down to 4000. Its a really nice boat tho, just want to make sure im not jumping in.

Thanks

Re: Is this a good deal...

NADA shows the value at about $2500. however if the boat has been garage kept, well maintained, and well cared fore, then it may be a good deal. however if the boat was stored outside, neglected, or not maintained, the price would be much less.

what is the boat's history? which engine? what is the condition of the interior?

What are the minor things? It could be a good deal, it could be a bad deal. Prepare to get your wallet out man. It cost money to even think about boats. The inside will tell you if it has been taken care of... Hear it run or better yet ask to scoot it across the lake before purchase. Study the engine real good for head leaks or any fluids and take a hammer and knock on the transom (back) and you will be able to hear if it has soft spots. If it is an I/O look at how well the engine mounts are holding up. For as old as it is, you will be fixing minor stuff all the time. But, if it floats and holds beer what else do you need?

Welcome aboard.

Being "new to boats" really does not give you the proper tools or knowledge to evaluate condition. I am not doubting your abilities however, I have seen these statements more times then I can remember.

First - The boat is grossly overpriced.
Second and probably the MOST IMPORTANT is when is the water test? No water test = NO SALE.

Get with someone who knows boats, knows how to properly inspect an engine, and knows what to look for in hull problems.

My honest opinion is $4000 is a nice down payment on a better boat.

Do not jump on this boat.

When buying......... the following is a partial list of questions which should all be answered with evidence ;)

Water pump? Last changed?
If a 4 stroke or an I/O Oil Change? Bellows Change?

Type of motor? Brand? Outdrive? There are many brands and types that we will flat out say STAY AWAY FROM!

Hull condition- Transom, flotation, stringers, any soft spots in decking?

Electrical items - lights, bilge pump, horn etc

Included accessories?

Trailer - Bearings last changed/serviced? Brakes last changed/serviced?

Paperwork? Clear titles on hand and available?

Don't get pressured ;)
Post your questions here on iboats and you will get great advice!

Fill in your profile...... how big is the family? Where are you going boating? Lake? Bay? Ocean? Are you going to ski? Tube? Fish?

It may sound complicated (it is for newer people) but I only mention it to prevent future nightmares and economic troubles.
