Hi all. I have a 1977 17.5' Hourston Glascraft hardtop. I need to install an 8" inspection hatch in the deck as I believe there is some water in the hull. Can anyone tell me where the stringers are located under the deck so I can get a rough idea of where to cut the hole. Many thanks.

Ayuh,... Generally speakin', the fuel tank is centered in the hull, if it's a single tank...

Stringers will be on either side of the tank...

Re: 17.5' Hourston Glascraft stringers

Hello Caribear and welcome to Iboats :) ..

Its kinda simple actually :) ..

Find a spot that you think your going put the pie plate..

Take a hammer and kinda tappy around that area... You should kinda hear a hollow sound here and there and then you might hit some ' Thud ' sounds ( kinda feels/sounds solid ).

So when you Think your kinda 5" away from any hard spots all the way around your tapping..drill a small 3/16-1/4" hole very slowly just until you break through the decking.

Now here is the Cool trick.. take a coat hanger and snip the hook off. Flatten the wire out to a manageable size enough to make a "smashed Z". Your first bend is 5" ( this will go down into the hole you just drilled ) then up a little and then another angle bend so you can rotate the thing in the hole.

Your basically making an inside compass to see if your going to hit a bulky or stringer.

Stick that baby down in the hole and Spin the hanger 360 deg. .. if you hit something then re-drill over a bit. ( remember that these little drill holes are going to be cut out of your 8" hole so you should have some wiggle room to move your pilot holes a few inches.

I hope you know what im saying here :) ..

Thanks Yacht Dr! That's so brilliantly simple I almost feel stupid not thinking of it myself! Now, if I can only find a wire coathanger....my girlfriend doesn't allow them in the house!
