hard to find parts for Mercury

Hello

I have a 87 35hp Mercury. I have it at a mechanics for repair. He is having trouble locating ignition parts for this motor. He has told me that Mercury is not making replacement parts for older engines. If this is the case, is it possible to install or retrofit newer ignition components? maybe just change the whole system with easier to locate parts, or is there another thread about this topic.

I don't have a bit of trouble getting parts for my engines. If not on here, either a not so local dealer, or my local NAPA dealer comes to the rescue.
