remote control warning horn..1983 evinrude

my warning horn in remote control(1983 evinrude 35hp) started melting and smoking...is it ok to operate without this part..its expensive to replace...and I dont know why it would start burning up...thanks

It is a overheat alarm. You can run the engine without it. Your engine has a tell tale for water the water pump keep an on that. You should inspect the thermostat when you change out the impeller to make sure it is operating correctly and you will most likely never have an issue.
Is this a fresh water engine?

A lot of the older mtrs never had a horn on them, so just keep an eye on it, but if the mtr overheats you'll know it.
