Guys help help help

Hey guys need your help wife getting really discouraged and frankly I am to all my everything is good on this motor a 98 Johnson 90 everything with this motorI've done but still can't catch a break just got a charger tried to turn it over didn't sound like it wanted to turn over went to check connections put my hand on the starter and it burnt the hell outta me help please give me some good news

It would be helpful if you could tell us in an orderly fashion what you have all done to this motor, or what some one else has done to this motor and the actual model of the motor.

So you have 98 Johnson 90 hp but we need more info than that. What is the model number? What exactly is going on? Is the starter not spinning? Is the engine not firing? We need to details in order to help you. The basics are do you have spark? Will it jump a 7/16" gap on a spark tester. What is the compression of cylinder? Do you have fuel? The more info the better.

Sounds like a bad starter or it stuck . Its hot yuo said right . It must of been turning or cranking right , but you cant start it right . Make sure its in water when you start her up .She's water cooled and needs the water for lube . You have to give more detail of thats wrong too . Please point it out . I think most of the members can help you out .

Make sure your starter is not lose . That can happen over time . Check your bolts too and electrical contecions as well . Charge your battrie off the boat its better that way , I think . Let the starter cool down and start out with a battery thats charged up well , and then try to start her up .

Remove spark plugs. See if you can turn the engine over by hand by simply gripping the flywheel. If the engine turns freely, run known good jumper cables from a known good battery that has a full charge directly to the electric starter.

If the above results in having the starter crank the engine over normally, then chances are that the starter is okay BUT try this same cranking scenario with the spark plugs installed (plug wires not hooked up) so as to test it under a load. If, under a load, the starter does not crank as it should, then it's time to tear the starter down for inspection.

What other problems are you having?

It moves freely the battery on it has is new and has been charged to 100% now when I try to turn over it sounds like the there isn't enough power to the starter to turn it over then it gets super hot when I saw a puff of white smoke coming from it I stopped let cool of then it started up but wouldn't run without consistent flow of fuel I have changed plugs wires had to change water pump cause previous owner melted it to hell rebuilt upper carb haven't got to lower one yet it has been a constant starting and running issue since ive bought it starting to believe the meaning of B.O.A.T

What does "but wouldn't run without consistent flow of fuel" mean do you have to keep pumping the primer bulb to keep it running or are you spraying premix down the carb throats? Have you cranked the engine for longer than 10 seconds at a time. The starter is only meant to crank the engine for short intervals.

The starter cannot be engaged for more than 20 seconds without overheating. It appears that you have exceeded that time period and the result is a damaged electric starter.

Always rebuild "all" carburetors when getting into that are of repairs. Be sure to manually clean the brass high speed jets which are located in the bottom center portion of the float chamber with a piece of single strand steel wire as cleaning solvent really doesn't do that job properly.

If pumping the fuel primer bulb allows the engine to continue running, suspect a faulty failing fuel pump.

If pumping the fuel primer bulb makes no difference in the engine's problem.... the carburetors are fouled and will require cleaning and rebuilding.
